New Insights into the Evaluation of Individuals with Intellectual Disability

Description: This short course will provide an overview of current topics in the diagnostic evaluation of individuals with intellectual disability. Nationally recognized speakers will evaluate approaches to associated clinical features including: advances in dysmorphology, epilepsy and neuromuscular deficits, the interpretation of behavioral and psychometric evaluations, autism’s new diagnostic strategies, and new approaches to X-linked mental retardation.  Practical information regarding the role of diagnostic modalities such as array CGH, neuroimaging, and metabolic evaluation will be discussed. This course will provide useful information on the current diagnostic yield, and counseling for this patient population and their families.

Preparing for an Expanding Range of Adult Genetic Consultations

Description: The clinical application of genetic and genomic information in the care of adults is expanding rapidly.  In many academic medical centers, clinical geneticists and genetic counselors are being increasingly called upon to work with subspecialists in the adult care arena to diagnose and manage adults with monogenic and polygenic disease.  This case-based short course will help all providers prepare to face some of the consultative questions that are emerging in adult care, regardless of whether the course registrants are primarily engaged in the pediatric or prenatal arena or as providers who are primarily engaged in adult care.  There will be presentations focused on Cardiovascular Genetics, Endocrine Genetics, Cancer* Genetics (*other than Colorectal and Breast Ovarian), and Neurogenetics.  In addition there will be case-based discussions that address issues important to current adult genetics practice (e.g. transition of care from pediatrics to adults).  Expect to learn state of the art content as well as practical approaches to some common clinical scenarios.
