CAP Inspection Training Seminar

In collaboration with American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has developed an accreditation program specifically designed for the unique needs of molecular and cytogenetic laboratory inspectors.

The purpose of this seminar is to demonstrate effective inspecting techniques so that inspectors will be more confident and comfortable performing inspections. Specific topics include the overall inspection process (eg, preparation, practical “how to” tips of conducting the inspection, and documenting the findings), as well as determining compliance with not only the accreditation requirements unique to molecular pathology and cytogenetics, but also the applicable requirements from the Laboratory General and All Common checklists.

The afternoon session will begin with recommendations for conducting the inspection of laboratories using the Molecular Pathology Checklist. Emphasis will be placed on the inspection of laboratories performing germline testing by Sanger sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methodologies.

NEW for 2016: NGS validation manuscripts from our CAP Resource Committee members. The manuscripts will provide useful validation examples for NGS panel and whole exome sequencing. Templates and worksheets will be discussed. Finally, shared checklist requirements addressing In situ Hybridization and array-based testing using the Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology Checklists will be discussed, as well as other Cytogenetics Checklist-specific requirements.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this training seminar, you will be able to:

  1. Prepare and perform an inspection using CAP resources.
  2. Use generally accepted techniques to produce consistent inspection findings.
  3. Identify deficiencies and recommendations and appropriately document findings.
  4. Identify compliace requirements unique to molecular pathology and cytogenetics.
