This session will provide a contemporary and comprehensive update on how genomic and precision medicine are being utilized in cardiology. A diverse group of faculty will address current state-of-the-art phenotyping, new diagnostic tools, 'gene-first' screening strategies and impact on lives saved, balanced critiques of the pros and cons of such strategies, evidence for surveillance, with a discussion of financial implications for policymakers and stakeholders. Lastly, gene-based therapies as a pathway to prevention and cure will be addressed. The disease spectrum will include myocardial infarction, dyslipidemia, cardiomyopathies, and sudden death.

Learning Objectives

  1. Evaluate the of a gene-first methodology in investigating the prevalence and penetrance of CDC Tier 1 conditions
  2. Critique gene-first screening, gene-disease mechanisms, and penetrance in cardiomyopathies (including ACMG-94)
  3. Apply Polygenic risk scores in preventing Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease and Myocardial Infarction
  4. Illustrate resolution of variants of uncertain significance in known cardiomyopathy genes
  5. Summarize current gene editing and gene-based therapies to treat and prevent Mendelian cardiovascular disease
