This session brings together three experts at the forefront of integrating the practice of genetics with ethics, the inherent tensions between medical professionals' desire to "treat", patients' ideal "treatment", and culturally sensitive care. Dr. Holly Tabor, Director of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, will explore ethical challenges regarding the professionals' roles in diagnosing and treating genetic conditions with disabilities. Lauren Maucere, Curriculum & Outreach Supervisor at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, will discuss her experiences as a deaf woman and educator, insights from living within the Deaf culture, and perspectives on current medical interventions for hearing. Dr. Grace Meier, a family medicine physician at the Clinic for Special Children- Lancaster, will share her experiences providing culturally sensitive genetic care to the Plain Community, emphasizing the need for community partnership that respects cultural values. Together, these experts will offer a thought-provoking session that helps medical professionals consider the balance between medical professionals' goals and patients' needs, to foster a symbiotic relationship in the genetic and genomic care realm.
