Kathryn Spears is a current postbaccalaureate fellow in the Human Biochemical Genetics section at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland where she studies alkaptonuria, a rare inherited disorder of tyrosine catabolism. Her primary research focus is analyzing the clinical efficacy of nitisinone, a proposed treatment for patients with alkaptonuria, in support of FDA approval of nisitinone for the alkaptonuria indication. Kathryn graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2023 with highest honors in Biochemistry & Chemical Biology for her undergraduate thesis work within the Division of Genetic Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She will matriculate to medical school in 2024 with aims to pursue a career in medical genetics.
