Medical Director, Assistant Professor
Dr. Mahmoud Aarabi is the Medical Director of UPMC Cytogenetics Laboratories, and Assistant Professor of Pathology, and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Aarabi is also the Chair of the Ethical, Social, and Legal Implications (ELSI) Committee at the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), and co-author of the recent Statement from the ACMG addressing biases in clinical and laboratory genetics. He has contributed to the efforts that ensure equitability and accessibility of reproductive carrier screening. This included development of professional resources for clinicians and study of population datasets for estimation of the burden of carriers for such genetic conditions. Dr. Aarabi's research has highlighted the importance of inclusion of global genomic data from diverse populations from different ancestries as a critical element for offering the most comprehensive genetic screening options to reproductive partners before or during pregnancy. Dr. Aarabi is an advocate of raising awareness and implementing effective ways to mitigate health disparities in genetics and genomics.
