Sarah Bates

Sarah Bates is Communications Director at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Bates directs a communications program that promotes the institute's goals and scientific accomplishments to a broad array of audiences and advises senior leadership on communications strategies and policies. She leads a diverse and talented communications group that serves as NHGRI's first point of contact for the public, stakeholders, and news media; her staff includes public affairs specialists, science writers, visual arts professionals, web developers, historians, and social media experts.
Previously, as a public affairs specialist at the National Science Foundation, Bates led communications for the Engineering Directorate and the BRAIN Initiative, covering complex and sensitive topics such as gravitational waves, sexual harassment, and disaster relief. She was the first Executive Secretary for the National Science Board's (NSB) External Engagement Committee, and has worked for the Society for Neuroscience as media officer and BrainFacts.org manager.
Bates received her B.A. in Physics and English from Hendrix College, her M.A. in Journalism from Syracuse University, and her M.S. in Astronomy from New Mexico State University.
