Yutaka Furuta
Resident,
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
I am Yutaka Furuta, MD a PGY-3 Medical Genetics resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in Nashville, TN. I received my MD degree from Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, and began my residency training in 2022 at VUMC. My clinical interests include inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) and undiagnosed diseases. Through my clinical and research activities with the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) Clinical Site at VUMC, I encountered many UDN subjects with suspected IMDs who remained undiagnosed despite traditional biochemical tests. This challenge led me to initiate a research project in the VUMC UDN, in which we found that the diagnosis of 85% of UDN subjects with an IMD was done through next-generation sequencing. This reinforced my belief that multiple, new diagnostic approaches were essential to detect IMDs that had been missed by conventional biochemical screening methods. I presented this work at the UDN Grand Rounds and it was published in 2024 (PMID: 39543639). During my residency training at VUMC, I have published 14 peer-reviewed articles that are primarily focused on UDN and IMDs. I aspire to become an academic biochemical geneticist, working to devise better diagnostic approaches for IMDs detection and to contribute to the development of new treatments to improve patient outcomes. After my Medical Genetics residency training, I plan to pursue a Biochemical Genetics fellowship at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) through the UCLA Intercampus Program.
