The E3 Genomics Pathways Program
The E3 Genomics Pathways Program aims to address the workforce shortage in clinical genetics and genomics. With advancements in genomic research and technology, the demand for genetic services has grown, yet there are not enough professionals to meet this need, and the workforce is aging.
To tackle these challenges, the program focuses on providing early exposure to careers in genetics for community college and undergraduate students. It aims to raise awareness of career opportunities in clinical genetics and genomics by engaging students in hands-on learning, career development activities, and networking with professionals.
The program is structured in three phases:
- Phase 1 Engage: Students participate in a one-day immersive experience at the ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting, where they engage in interactive learning and attend scientific sessions.
- Phase 2 Equip: Students gain ongoing support through monthly virtual experiences, including access to ACMG’s educational resources and webinars. See the E3 YouTube Channel to watch and engage with all the recorded sessions.
- Phase 3 Empower: Students participate in quarterly virtual mentoring sessions with genetics professionals, providing long-term career guidance.
A distinguishing feature of the E3 Program is its intentional engagement of undergraduate and community college students from the host city and surrounding region of the ACMG Annual Meeting. By partnering with local colleges, universities, and STEM pipeline programs, E3 creates a geographically grounded pathway that connects students to genomics education and careers where they live and study.
For example, at the 2025 ACMG Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, E3 Scholars were recruited from Los Angeles Valley College and East Los Angeles College, drawing heavily from the Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) chapters at these institutions, as well as from the Belmont High School STEM Program. The Belmont cohort was connected through the Los Angeles Career Academy program in partnership with the Los Angeles Convention Center, strengthening ties between secondary education, community colleges, and professional scientific organizations.
Building on this model, the 2026 ACMG Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, will engage E3 Scholars from a broad range of local and regional institutions, including the University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Anne Arundel Community College; Washington Adventist University; Johns Hopkins University; William & Mary; and the Community College of Baltimore County.
By promoting early exposure to genomics and medical genetics, the E3 Program aligns with national priorities to cultivate a more inclusive, well-prepared genomics workforce, helping to address both workforce shortages and disparities in patient care.
